Welcome to the Sleaford Concert Band website, and associated bands.
The Sleaford Training Band and
Miller Magic, a 1940's Glenn Miller band,
Jim McQuade, founder of the Sleaford Concert Band, has been the Director of Music since the band began almost 16 years ago. It was formed on 9th May 1998 and has developed into one of the leading Wind Bands in Lincolnshire with around 40 members. A combination of amateur and semi-professional musicians rehearse every Saturday morning in Sleaford to produce a very professional sound. We have never lost sight of the fact that we are an amateur band with a motto of
"Music for all in the rural area".
The first rehearsal included a violinist, a pianist, a guitarist who couldn’t read music, a recorder player who played clarinet (Ken is now the conductor of the Training Band and the solo clarinettist!!) and a saxophonist who could not sit down and play because she hadn’t had that lesson yet! We had one piece of music and spent two hours rehearsing it.
Mr John Larder and Mr Frank Graves, local businessmen, were two of our earliest supporters. John provided much needed finance and Frank is now the President of the band.
In 2000 The Sleaford Training Band was formed to provide an opportunity for both young and old beginners to participate in music making in a training environment. Ken Garfield was appointed as Director of Music, and his undoubted talent as a teacher have been put to good use ever since.
Since then the band has developed further, creating Miller Magic during 2012 which is also compiled of members of the Sleaford Concert Band.
The Sleaford Concert Band has played locally in conjunction with the Royal British Legion at the regular Poppy Prom, presented the firework spectacular concert at Heckington Show and recently been on tour to Berlin and Paris. Plans are already in place for the 2017 tour to Hungary.
The Sleaford Concert Band is a registered charity, number 1080056.
