Richard Joyce - New Director of Music
As Richard's parents were members of the Salvation Army, he was surrounded by music from a very early age. Taking up the Clarinet, aged 6, he progressed quickly, soon realising that music would be a life-long vocation. He joined the Royal Air Force in 1984 as a Direct Entry Musician, and was posted to the Band of the RAF College in the same year. In early 1986, he was sent to Uxbridge to join the Central Band where from 1989-2010 he held the position of Principal Clarinetist. During his time in the RAF he travelled extensively, performing at some of the World's most prestigious venues from Japan to the USA. He has appeared as a soloist on both concert stage, and on BBC Radio 3 and holds professional diplomas in both Clarinet Performance and Musical Direction. Richard lives locally (in Leasingham) and is married with 2 young daughters. In his spare time he enjoys teaching both Clarinet and Piano, and is a keen amateur photographer.
He sees it as a huge privilege to take over as Musical Director of Sleaford Concert Band and is ever-mindful of the commitment, dedication and vision which Jim McQuade (the Band's founder) has shown over its 20 year history.
Since then the band has developed further, creating Miller Magic during 2012 which is also compiled of members of the Sleaford Concert Band.
The Sleaford Concert Band has played locally in conjunction with the Royal British Legion at the regular Poppy Prom, presented the firework spectacular concert at Heckington Show and recently been on tour to Berlin, Paris and Ypres in Belgium. Plans are already in place for the 2020 tour to Rhineland, Germany.
The Sleaford Concert Band is a registered charity, number 1080056.
